Encouraged in the Lord our God!

1 Samuel 30:6
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

Hey, buddy why the long face? Some people think that when you become a Christian you automatically get happy and no bad things ever happen to you! Some think that for the Christian life is one big bowl of cherries with whipped cream on top!

In this section of scripture we have seen a lot of adventures. David was running from Saul, and in the middle of all this he gets to do some awesome war games! If you love action flicks then plant yourself down in front of God's word and watch this made for TV movie!

The action includes all the right stuff to keep us on the edge of our seats, wanting more!

David is returning towards Ziklag. He arrives and discovers the smoldering remains of that city. The women and children had been taken captive, and only the Lord knows what is happening to them. Some think that God allowed this incident to happen to David because he had joined the Philistines (the enemy). Be sure our sins will find us out!

Verse 6 paints a hard picture.

1. David was greatly distressed. Anytime we get out of the perfect will of God, we should be distressed (the dictionary defines this; "to cause to worry or be troubled") David should be worried. He needed to be troubled. He will shortly find out how much his decisions will cost him and how much it cost others around him.

2. The people spoke of stoning him. everything is great fun until someone gets hurt. It is a blast to be involved in the battle until it affects me in a personal way. It is amazing how quickly people will turn against you! It is equally amazing that these close Alli's will flip and seek to kill when push comes to shove! Because the soul of all the people was grieved. The events now revealed, causes the people to lose the trust and admiration they once had for David, grief is a powerful force that the enemy of our soul can use to knock us out.

3. Every man (grieved) for his sons and for his daughters. I believe that we can see a glimpse of what is happening in our churches today we are allowing our sons and daughters to be held captive by the enemy. We allow them to go unprotected and the enemy is more than happy to steal them away. Would to God we would be grieved for our sons and daughters before the enemy gets them and may we wake up and fight to the bitter end to keep them in the will of God.

Now the best part. When you find yourself in a judgement situation, when the people turn against you, When other talk about your demise. We need to be like David and "Encourage our self in the Lord our God"

By the way if you are keeping score verse 8 tells the rest of the story as God makes a great promise: "And David enquired at the Lord. saying, shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all"

As Paul Harvey would say. "Now you know the rest of the story!"
