Deuteronomy 8:3
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
Food is a very powerful tool, We can do many things without the proper tools, but if we do not have food we quickly putter out! God designed humans to operate by feeding themselves in order to function properly.
When we are deprived of basic food intake our performance will quickly suffer. This verse if carefully read, reveals the tender heart of God towards his children. God equates food which provides sustenance and vitality in our physical life, equally with the need to feed our spiritual life as much or more than we feed our bodies.
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger.
We take eating for granted. We recite "God is good, God is great, now fill my plate!" prayers and then devour anything that does not move on the kitchen table. We are fat and lazy, we expect way too much, feeling like we suffered if we do not get a steak that weighs in around a pound or two.
God used the lack of food to Humble. When we actually do not have food stuff in our cabinets, nor any means of obtaining it, we begin to be humbled! When God humbles us it is for a purpose that will yield good results. when God wants our undivided attention, He may use a lack of food to get the attention He deserves.
God is the perfect Father, His heart is always on His children! Our passage uses the word suffered. I believe that this word has a twofold implication. First, God did not want to cause us any pain or inconvenience to us by withholding food from his children, but allowed with his eye on us always ready to rescue us from ourselves. Second the word suffered means just that! God allows his children to experience a certain amount of pain to draw us to his side.
And fed thee with manna...
What a promise! God is always in the background preparing the best rewards for His children that decide to trust and obey him. He works in a supernatural way by providing a food source that can not be explained, it was never before seen or experienced. God provides a source of provision that is beyond imagination, and this source will never be used exactly the same way ever again. God has a plan that is unique to get you and me to a place where he can use us, he provides supernaturally in provisions that we have no idea where it all comes from! It is exciting to be a child of God.
That he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.
God uses a lack to give much! He desires us to have first hand knowledge and experience that He will provide for the physical and even provide for the spiritual. As much as I love homemade bread, I need to desire as much or greater every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord!
Are You Fed Up?
