Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk, and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
The last couple of weeks have been filled with craziness on every front. Watch the news and you can not help but see that this world has gone off the deep end without a life preserver!
We are still in the middle of seeing people act weird about a singer's death. The news outlets make every word that leaks out of this families collective mouth a major news event. What is worse we are stopped in out tracks to gobble up these tidbits of nonsensical puke. I even heard talk at church about this!
Moving on to other things that irk me, is the lack of commitment among Christians. I may have my dandruff up a bit, but, I do not see many Christians willing to do anything of lasting value to please God. This chapter in 1 Thessalonians, is subtitled in the Bible I am using as: "The Model Walk and the Believer's hope" It appears to me that many Christians want to do their own thing without regard to what the Lord has to say about it. I do not see much concern about doing or obeying the Lord in the way they conduct themselves.
I also find a very disturbing aspect to my accusations! I am guilty of this same thing. I pray that we (all Christians) would get back to the Word of God, learning by the examples God has given us in His precious Word.
That as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and please God.
The Apostle gives us a lot to think about in a very short passage. We see a lot of heavy words, that should motivate us. Strong words that put a great emphasis to do what we have been taught.
Furthermore: This word implies that there is more! More responsibility on our part. More reasons to check ourself in light of revealed expectations of God's Word. Every Christian can and must constantly check themselves, to be better at walking the walk.
Beseech: This word is a strong plea! We use the word beg! The Apostle begs us to look inward to check our actions. We need to be vigilent in our outreach to others that need the saving grace of God. By our actions we have the power to introduce someone to the saving grace of Jesus Christ, or by our actions we damn people to Hell, by turning them against the Loving power of Jesus Christ. (if that is a Christian!, I don't want anything to do with it!)
Exhort: This word is defined asto incite by argument or advice, urge strongly
If more Christians decided to please God, I wonder how that would affect the average local Church. How would that affect our communities? How would that affect the whole world?
When we decide to please God, a plethora of blessings will be made available to us! We would not be able to receive all the goodness God would pour out unto us!
So ye would abound more and more.
I pray that we would be able to wrap our mind around this truth! I for one, desire to be in a place of pleasing God and receiving from God all he has prepared for me. I do not think it is wrong for Christians to desire the best of what God has for us, in fact many of us fail to receive the simplest of blessings because we refuse to live our life in light of God's reveled Word!
My desire is to Please God! What is your desire?
