Psalm 35:1
1Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me.
This week has shaped up to be one that is packed with a large amount of activities in it. Actually the next ten days or so will pave the way for the coming year.
The Lord has opened new opportunities for us! But, the enemy is upset, and fighting mad. This verse come at the most needed time. If you read your Bible daily, no doubt that on a day you need encouragement it will be there.
Plead my cause, O Lord,
When I read this portion of the verse, my mind drew a picture, I am waiting to see the Lawyer. I am about to ask him to represent me. The matter I am seeking him for is one of life and death. It is a situation that demands the best advocate. I can not represent myself, it would be foolish for me to even attempt to.
We all need to hide behind the One who can and will "plead" for our benefit! The Lord Jesus Christ has promised to protect us and keep us in these times of need, as well as in the good times. Everyday I see lawyers that advertise things like "One call, that's all" or "Get the most from the ones that hurt you" and so on! But our Lord extends the most reassuring invitation to Come unto Him! His righteousness is more than I need!
Then the Psalmist asks for specific help in two matters:
With them that strive with me:
One thing I have learned is that when you are moving forward with the Lord's leadership opposition is going to dog your steps. I have heard that if something is right to do, then you will face major opposition. Sometimes this opposition comes in the form of competition. It can be a pain to be in competition, because it take away from the goal at hand, when we need to look over our shoulder all the time it detracts us from putting our all into the work at hand.
The Psalmist must have been stressed to the max. He has felt the irritation of someone striving to interrupt progress in the work and ministry. The word strive is a word that is an irritation, but is not detrimental or fatal.
Fight against them that fight against me.
Sometimes the problems we face seem to be very volatile. Sometimes the battle we find ourselves in could knock us out or even destroy us if we do not get help. Most of us Christians underestimate the strength of the enemy! We win a few little fights, and immediately think we can win the war. I believe that most ministers that fail, fail because they battle the enemy on their own!
The Psalmist reminds us that the struggle is not ours, it is the Lord's! The psalmist seeks the strength and protection of the one who can and will win all wars! We need to heed this example in our daily life. We need to hire the best advocate we can! Since the Lord has already paid the price for us, it makes sense to run to Him and ask that He fight for us... Him alone!
