Dead Man Walking!

Colossians 3:2-3
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

The last event I want to attend is a funeral. (pun intended!) If we can get past the emotional aspects of a funeral, we can learn a lot of lessons. Even in the ritual of how we deal with death helps us that remain behind to draw closer to God.

Our passage this morning teaches us a lot in a shot space within the sacred Scriptures. As a Christian I can draw on the teaching that is contained in the passage above.

Set your affection on the things above,
The first thing that pops out in this passage is the word "affection" and not affection(s). I have often quoted and even read this verse in the plural. In fact the word is singular, a strong word that would be weakened if made plural.

"Affection", A dead man only has a singular view. A dead man is not concerned with things in this world, He has passed beyond the vale and is singularly attached to the eternal. These verses were written to the redeemed soul. It is a great reminder for us to look at the dearly departed and learn that the only thing that matters is the things that are eternal.

We need to arrange our own life in such a way that we mimic the singular drive of a dead man. As a Christian we need to eternally focused on the things above, and not on the world. We should set an example to the lost on how to be in Christ. We need to be singularly working on telling as many people about full and free salvation that is available to all who believe.

I heard it said that we can be so earthly minded we can be of no heavenly good to any one! What a shame! May God help us to be "Dead Men Walking!"

Your life is hid with Christ in God.
What a promise! As a born again child of God, I can be dead to self! if I am Dead in Christ, He can then work the eternal things out through us. God can not use a man that is full of this old sinful life. He only uses saved men that are "Hid with Christ in God."!

Are you a "Dead Man Walking?"

  1. We are to ''Reckon ourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive unto God.''

He Who redeemed us owns us, and we are not our own. Therefore its none of our business where we live, what we have, and what we do, or say, only HIS.
