Psalm 4:1
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
I drove a school bus for about eight years, I guess I saw about everything you could expect school aged children to do. I did like the interaction with them. As I read this verse I was reminded of a little fellow that rode my bus. The first year he went to school his parents decided it would be great for him to ride the bus since his older sister was on board.
Every day for the first year the same scene would transpire. I would pull the bus to the edge of his driveway, The little fellow would be out in front of his mother, sister, and dog. He would be excited, leaping up and down as I slowed down. The bus rolled to a stop and the door opened, the little fellow would dart toward the bus, at about the halfway point on the driveway the little fellow would begin to cloud up, his face would get red, and tears would flow. Then he would turn toward mother, lift his arm, crying loudly; "Pick me up momma, pick me up!" Still crying he would make his way onto the bus sit down and within a block or two he would be a happy camper!
The writer of this Psalm must have been a lot like the little fellow, I can see him marching off to the scary world of the enemy, looking up toward the Father a cry of the heart goes up; "Hear me when I call, O God, hear my prayer!"
Hear me when I call,
I believe every person wants to be heard! God placed inside each one of us the desire for mutual relationship. We want someone to listen and understand us. As a child of God we want the undivided attention of the hearing Father!
O God of my righteousness:
A statement of fact! We have no righteousness in us! Our only righteousness is found in God the Righteous!
Thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress;
Pressure from the daily grind can wipe us out. The pressure of life can squeeze the stuffing out of us, it causes us many health problems. Pressure or distress can lead to a shortened life. When we get halfway down the driveway of daily life, we should turn to the Heavenly Father in prayer, crying out "Hear me when I call, O God,... hear my prayer!"
Instead of being restricted by the pressure of life, God gives us an enlargement! He provides us more breathing room! He takes the pressure off, and allows us some wiggle room! (Praise Him!)
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.
Mercy is what we must have, we do not deserve anything, but God gives us mercy! He hears our prayers. Be assured that just like the little fellow that cried "Pick me up momma, pick me up!" and his mother picked him up every day, God will have mercy and hear my prayer!
Hear, hear! Are you sure God hears your prayers?, I am!
