Psalm 20:1
The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
Trouble seems to be just around the corner from all of us. I heard someone say that if you are not coming out of trouble, or going into trouble, just wait a while it will catch up to you.
Everyone has troubles, it is hard to define what constitutes trouble, we all know when it is happening to us. The Psalmist must have been bracing for an onslaught of trouble, as he penned this verse.
If you were to spend a day with us in ministry to soldiers, you would see this verse in a new light. Every one of them have many problems. The stress of Basic Training is tremendous and with all of the shouting and intense re-training of old habits help to create a very stressful atmosphere.
For whatever reason, it seems like as soon as a fellow in processes into the Army his personal life falls apart. Families get sick, loose jobs, has bad news on every level. The hardship of being lonely and away from home for the first time is in itself a trouble. But in this verse we find great hope and comfort.
The Lord here thee in the day of trouble;
If I had to guess what one thing would relieve about 90% of the troubles that our soldiers have while in basic training, would be a very simple thing. They want to know that some one hears them. and not only heres the request, but hears with understanding and compassion. I see a lot of troubles leave as I listen, then pray and hug these warriors.
I am not the best at doing this but God is! The promise here is that God, The Lord!!! will hear and react to our troubles.
The name of the God of Jacob defend thee;
The Psalmist points to a historical fact! The God of Jacob had rewarded them with a great victory, and provided great security to these people. When we are in trouble, we are easily overtaken by bad judgments. We are more likely to be defeated by the enemy, who looks for ways to exploit our troubles to keep us from seeing God in the situations.
As we experience the relationship with God that is fresh and alive day by day, We will develop a history that proves the Lord will defend us in every situation and trouble that comes along.
Bottom line! We are all going to be in troubles, we all need to be defended! The LORD!, GOD! will hear us, and defend us.
Who will hear you and defend you in troubles?
